Today I spoke with one of NHOA’s Facility Ombudsmen who had recently worked a dietary case in one of our nursing facilities. She was visiting with Mrs. H, who had requested two cookies for dessert instead of the one that the facility usually served. Our Ombudsman went to the kitchen to get a second cookie, but was told by the staff working that “Administration only says to give ONE cookie.” Our ombudsman soldiered on, and got Mrs. H a second cookie. We laughed about how such an easy fix took so much effort to get!
Later this afternoon, I spoke with another Ombudsman about a resident who was sexually assaulted by another resident. We talked about how the facility has an obligation to keep residents safe – even from each other. The solution to this case has been a little harder to work out.
The complaints we work on vary widely, but no one else does the work of the ombudsman. It is so important to us to have your support! To make a donation, please click here.
