Be a NHOA Volunteer!

You can give so much for so little of your time as a NHOA Volunteer! Make a wonderful difference in the life of a nursing home resident. Many nursing home residents receive few regular visitors throughout the year so volunteers are appreciated and welcomed. Visiting times can be arranged to accommodate all ages and schedules.  Volunteers receive a basic training  and are asked for a commitment of at least three months.

In each of the volunteers programs, hours are flexible to accommodate individual schedules.  Typically, volunteers give an hour per week although the frequency of visits may vary for volunteer groups.  Training and facility assignments also can be tailored to fit the volunteer's personal interests.

Friendly Visitors

Provide companionship, warmth, and smiles any time of the day.  About fifty percent of people living in nursing homes have NO regular visitors besides caretakers.  Visitors play an important role in helping elderly seniors improve their quality of life and overall health.

A great experience for families with grandparents who live out of town yet want to give their children a relationship with the elderly.

Perfect for students who need community service hours for school or college.

"Silver Spoons" Mealtime Companions

Receive some special training and assist one or more residents at a specific mealtime once a week (lunch or dinner).  This mealtime program is to stimulate residents with conversation and encourage them to eat more.

Silver Spoons Volunteers have three choices:

Weekly visit during lunch or dinner to provide residents with stimulation and  conversation and friendship.

Provide a potluck dinner for a group of residents every two or three months.

Receive some extra special training and actually assist some residents at a specific mealtime once a week.  Volunteers choose which  meal they prefer.

Volunteer Groups

Your club, neighborhood, church or synagogue group may provide a potluck dinner for a group of residents every two or three months.

*    Groups are appreciated on a regular schedule or as a one-time special event visit.  Clubs, neighborhoods, student associations, religious groups, civic groups, etc., can provide a special event party, play games, read to or show movies, or decorate rooms.

*    Residents particularly enjoy groups who prepare a potluck meal, which is a welcome change from "institutional" food.  Groups which enhance the mealtime experience with potluck dinners are considered "Silver Spoons" volunteers.

.....Or tell us what kind of volunteer service you would like to provide to residents. A warm, friendly heart is the ONLY requirement!

I have an idea!
